How to get to Wawel Royal Castle

On foot

A walk from the Krakow Main Station to Wawel Castle is a great way to get to know the city. The distance is only 2.6 km, which takes about 35-45 minutes on foot. By walking along this route, you can not only reach one of the most important monuments of Krakow, but also visit the surrounding area and enjoy the atmosphere of the city. On the way we pass, among others, Main market and Planty.

By car

There are several parking options in the Wawel area where you can leave your car.

Underground parking at the Square na Groblach – 24-hour paid parking, located near Wawel. It takes only 5 minutes to walk from here.
Parking on ul. . Florian Straszewski – in the immediate vicinity of Wawel. This is a paid parking lot, available 24 hours a day.
Guarded parking – located at ul. Poselska 7 is only 400 m away from Wawel.
Parking ul. Saint Idziego – about 600 meters from Wawel. Parking is paid and available 24 hours a day.

Public trransport

Public transport in Krakow is well organized, and trams and buses run frequently. Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines located at stops and in means of transport, as well as through mobile applications.

From the Main Railway Station to Wawel:

Tram Line 10: Get on at the „Dworzec Główny” and get off at the stop Wawel.
Tram Line 52: Get on at the „Dworzec Główny Tunel” and get off at the stop „ Wawel 2t.

From Krakow Airport to Wawel:

Train: A direct train from the airport to Krakow Main Station runs every 30 minutes. The journey takes approximately 17 minutes. At the Main Station you can change to tram line 10

   Wawel Castle is one of the places you should definitely see when visiting Kraków.    Visited the magnificent Wawel Royal Castle, one of Poland’s most iconic historical landmarks! 🇵🇱

Perched on Wawel Hill overlooking the Vistula River, this castle was the residence of Polish kings for centuries and a symbol of Polish national identity. Its history dates back to the early medieval period, with the present Renaissance palace showcasing beautiful architecture, an impressive arcaded courtyard and richly decorated royal chambers.

An interesting fact is that King Sigismund II Augustus commissioned a magnificent collection of Flemish tapestries, some of which can still be admired inside the castle. The hill is also associated with the famous legend of the Wawel Dragon!

There are several exhibitions inside, including the royal tapestries, Armoury, Crown Treasury and royal apartments.  These require separate tickets, so plan your visit accordingly.

Another advantage was its convenient location, within walking distance of my hotel, ibis Krakow Centrum.

   We absolutely loved visiting Wawel Castle during our trip to Kraków!

It’s such a beautiful place, with amazing architecture, interesting history, and lovely surroundings. We really enjoyed walking around the castle grounds, taking photos, and admiring the views over the Wisła River.

The whole area has a special atmosphere, and it’s easy to spend time just wandering around and taking everything in.

We only paid to go into the Dragon's Den, which worked out £10 for a family of 4. Fun to go down the spiral staircase and fun effects in the den itself but only takes a short amount of time. You come out at the statue of the dragon, which breathes fire every couple of minutes.  Once you've done that, you're below the castle so would say leave that until last. I highly recommend dedicating a full day to Wawel Castle (for those who love art, history, and culture). The only drawback: there's no single ticket to purchase for each section, but rather multiple tickets that allow entry to the different rooms, so those who want to see everything need to carefully consider the itinerary and timing of each visit (especially on weekends and Sundays).
